My oldspeed engine

This winter I am working with a oldspeed engine. I have a 36 HP engine, a "Okrasa-style" camshaft, a machinejob on the heads for more power, two manifolds and two 28 PCI carburettors. I will also add a FRAM oilfilter on it. The machinejob on the engine and parts is done by a very skilled person here in my region. The engine is almost ready, only waiting for the heads. The engine is very fresh with new or NOS parts inside. I can`t wait to drive with it this summer.

The old semaphores from the oval

When I bought the black oval in 1993 it had the original semaphores. My dad fix`d it the easy way - and that was ok for a year. Then I bougt a nice set wich I still have. The old semaphores was sold to Espen/VW54 and late in 2010 I was lucky enough to get they back. They will be restored some day, but just now is it fun to own it again. They belong to this car, and they will be back in action:)

Boblehue sandblasted this parts for me. The other cyclonefilters is in nice condition and did not need sandblasting. The manifolds is only sandblasted innside for better float for the gasoline:)

The old hood is removed from the dark and dusty storage in one forgotten corner in the barn. The hood is damaged during the roof-crash back then. I will take a closer look at it in the new year. The old Capitain made a smile when I tried it on him.

The Captitan Johansson did paint the wheels sometime before 1964. This paint is now almost removed by me. The rest of paint will be away during the winter. Thats the plan.

I am working slooowly on my vintage speed-project, but I have done something. The NOS-set of Steely rapid is almost ready for mounting. I just have to sandblast the old heatherboxes and paint them first. I look forward to try them in the split.

Evry little boy dreamt of this car from the famous movie by Kjell Aukrust and Ivo Caprino. I did see the movie in cinema when I was a kid, but I did never got the scala-model. This winter I decided to have one. Now it is on display in my little workshop together with so much other stuff.

On this picture you can see the spring on the way up through the original upholstry. A friend of mine did fix it and put the cloth back again. I am so happy, because the interior is in its best shape. I have also got a new OG panel under the left rear window. It only need mounting the brown piping which I have ready.

The Capitan and Härnösand city

The Capitan has lived his whole life in Härnösand kommun in Sweden. This is the very same city where the famous Kempes-barndoor comes from. I want to go visit the city with the car sometime. Maybe the 52-model have filled up the gastank on the Esso-station.

My hard working postman must be hating me. This is just a litle bit of what i drop into my mailbox. The romantic picture is from the Norwegian VW-dealer H.A. Møller, just like the hat and the workingsuit. The "pull-starter"/snurrestart is for 30/36 HP and bought at a local swapmeet. I also got one for 25 NOS in the box. More to come.

Last night I delivered my Combi FM for service. The same guy had a radiobracket for my Radionette TransAuto:) I also got the bracket for Radionette Kurer Auto FM and one for Schaub Lorenz Touring 80 as well. Maybe I can listen to radio in my cars this summer?

Before Christmas I bougt a set of manifolds and carbs from the US. This parts is from the US-made Dietz. I have some linkage, and are planning to get this functional sometime. I won`t promise you when. The manifolds will need som work inside to make the benzin float better.

I like to collect small parts likt they in the picture. The best buy is the rubberhats for split and the runningboardclip for old splits. I did also buy 25 HP pistonrings. You never now.

I had some trouble with the brakes, and now everything is checked out and put togther with some new parts that did fit better. New linkpin and kingpin set is also added for the best drivingpleasure. The new absorbers is also in place with the fantastic original clips.

My 25 HP engine causes me some trouble this days. Just now is it packed down in boxes and I am thinking. The 25 HP will need a machinejob, and until now I have not found anyone in Norway doing the job. Maybe radios are better for me:) Hang on, I will be blogging more soon.

Oval57/Radiohead

I always TRY to hold the focus on 50`s VW and parts. But sometimes I can`t help. I LOVE to collect 50`s Coca Cola-items, and I can`t live without my old cola-cooler f.ex. This Christmas I dreamt of a norwegian-made Radionette Kurèr Combi FM radio with LP-player (singles). I ended up with 3 Combi, and 11 other old radios. FOCUS!!!!

I will restore the one with FM and put the coolest on the shelf, and sell the rest and buy VW-parts for it. Now I only need some more singles from the 50`s.

Every little part has been washed and brushed well befor delivery. The carbs, fuelpump and distributor is ready, and so also the dynamo and D-reguator.

It has been quiet on my blog during Christmas, but I have been into VW-stuff anyway. My 25 HP is delivered for overhaul. I had a turn with dismantling the engine, but now it is in 1000 pices. I will need new cam and crank and more. Thats 25 HP life.

I have searched for the correct tools, or missing tools for my cars. The split come with the most tools. I belive it is correct with hubcap-remover and extra bolt for the wheel? I got of course fanbelt as well.

I know that the oval should have 14 mm wrench, but not 14 mm and 10 mm (8?). Have you seen any original toolbag with just 14 mm and not "2 in 1"?

I have had Splitboys photoalbum for nearly a year now, and I finally have scanned in some pictures from the mid 90`s. Splitboy and I went to Mantorp BugRun first time in 1994 in his 1973 Cal-looker. At that time my oval was just bought and started on restauration.

I am going to change for the original frontaxle. The original is in good shape, but need of course a little TLC. The clips will be restored and welded in some new parts. I now that K-N makes them repro, but this can be fixed. I am also happy for finding the correct alu-nut for the speedocable.

Yesterday I got some help from "Boblehue" with the engine. The engine is the OG from the "52 Capitan". The engine needs to be checked out and will maybe need some more work than I hoped for.

I have been working with some different things in my basement. F.ex. a lot of OG toolmaps and OG tools. I love the original tools that come with the oldest VW. And of course Hazet.

Finally the 52 Capitan rides again. Me and my father had a hard turn last wednesday, and the car did roll by it self on asfalt for the first time since 1964. The very first trip was made to the gas-station for the very first fuel from a real gas-station. Last time the car visited a gas-station a man came out and helped you filling gas:) Maybe he did wash your frontscreeen as well? It was a pleasure to drive the car for the first time. You will see it at this years SCC...

Will it be nice driving?

The first (and only?) owner back in the days was a swedish Capitan. I found 8 (!) sharp bulleets in the car when it hang in the "tip-girl". The rims is ready painted and ready for the car very soon:) The dashboard is rubbed and made ok for mounting instruments. I think I will be ready for the summer?

The wireharness is in place for the OG splitsemaphores. The harness was removed.

I had a great oval-weekend working with my split. "Oval-weekend" means in norwegian that friday og monday also are "holiday". I have a tight program before june so I must work very hard an straigt to the point. Here is a bunch of pictures taken during the work this weekend. Enjoy and please comment if it is something. The interior is only fitted for making a idea for later adjustment.

I received this image on my phone last night. It seems like someone have joined forces in the garage, and put the old capitan back together. Oval 57 is quite obsessed with details, and nothing is of course left untouched. He want's the car to look "unrestored", but can he keep his fingers off the patina?? I have bought several things in the last. The Norwegian VW and babe-calender, Porsche-parts, original oval fenders in good shape, and much more. This summer me and my girlfriend used the oval on nearly one week holiday in West-Telemark in Norway. Here is some pictures. The most of the trip was on bad roads with a lot of heavy hills.
